Wow! Get on board! Talent Academy's Pirate Theme Summer Camp2016-7-10
Very honestly, from all of us at Talent Academy- what an incredible first two days to kick off the camp! This week's theme is "Pirates!" and the children here have surprised the staff and U.S. Counselors with their talent aptitude, English ability, and amazing positivity.
While some children were very sad to leave their parents, this sentiment quickly dissipated as the camp embarked on our daily pirate adventures! We began the camp both of these days with Circle Time! Here our Counselors have engaged the students in song, dance, and discussion about their favorite things to do. Monday's question: what is your favorite thing to eat? Here we got "pizza!" "Ice cream!" and "dinosaur!"
While English is difficult for many students, their ability to communicate with our U.S. counselors has been impressive. Needless to say, as the day went on, the English improved.
With a quick snack break, the kids then dove into music and movement! Students quickly learned the lyrics and dance to: Once I caught a Fish Alive and Row Row Row Your Boat! An exciting boat race ensued from this, where every student sat on the ground like a boat, pushed from their legs, and raced across the room!
With this completed we took the kids outdoors where they learned about the concepts of wind, the ocean, and fishing. After this, the children applied this by simulating fishing with our toy equipment and the "wind" by blowing into a straw to push boats in water forward.
Arts and crafts, a clear favorite from these campers, excitedly followed. This week each child got to create their own pirate gear! They've created telescopes, a "wave in a bottle", and draw pirate ships. In addition they have begun to make their own pirate hats, swords, and "captain hooks!"At this rate, the campers will confuse you for pirate sailors, Argh!
As a smooth break, we had a nice relaxing lunch and nap. The food was a hit with many kids, who were able to eat almost their entire box.
Energized from a snack from their nap, they day had its final stretch to finish their arts and crafts, indoor playground time to let out their amazing energy, and story time to engage their imaginations. The hit story from these two days was: The Rainbow Fish! Where we read about the importance of sharing. All in all, these first two days have been beyond amazing. The kids bonded very well with each other, their ability to learn and listen in English is already improving, and most importantly: they are having fun!
We are so excited to end this weeks pirate theme strong- where we have many more surprises and fun activities prepared. Stay tuned!
